LOS ANGELES >> Fourteen years ago, when Joe Maddon was the Angels bench coach, his team handed the ball for Game 7 of the World Series to an untested rookie named John Lackey.
On Wednesday, as manager of the Chicago Cubs, Maddon will hand the ball for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series to a wily old veteran named … John Lackey.
And, to hear Maddon tell it, there is little difference.
“He hasn’t changed at all,” Maddon said. “He’s in better shape. That’s my answer. He’s actually in physically better shape than he was. Check out the pictures from 2002 compared to how he looks now.”
Aside from having a little more youthful fat back then, Lackey has the same repertoire then as now, despite 14 years and one Tommy John surgery in between.
Lackey has a slider and a changeup, which has improved, but Maddon said he’s still essentially a guy who lives with a 92-94 mph fastball.

SAN DIEGO >> More than 40 family and friends will greet Luke Walton in his native city.
They will see the same man that helped University High of San Diego win a state title his senior year patrol the Lakers’ sideline. They will see whether Walton can guide the Lakers (2-4) to an upset victory against his former employer in the Golden State Warriors (4-1) tonight at Valley View Casino Center. And they will see a statue unveiling of Walton’s Hall-of-Fame father (Bill).
Though Walton admitted “it’s always special to go home,” he described his retu as “more of a business trip” for reasons beyond already visiting there as a former NBA player and Golden State assistant.
Arena officials stressed to the Lakers not to worry about a slippery floor, which ended last year’s exhibition between the Lakers and Warriors during the third quarter. But Walton still sounded aoyed by the ordeal.

Michigan moved up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll, right behind No. 2 Ohio State, to give the Big Ten rivals their best combined ranking since the 2006 season, when they played the only 1-vs.-2 game in the series.
Alabama remained No. 1 on Sunday with a season-high 60 first-place votes. The Buckeyes stayed No. 2 after an overtime victory against Wisconsin, which fell two spots to 10th. The Wolverines moved up in an off week with Clemson slipping to fourth. The Tigers had their own overtime escape at home against North Carolina State.
Michigan has its best ranking since it was No. 3 after losing to Ohio State in ‘06.

Galaxy clinch home playoff game with shutout of Houston

HOUSTON >> Alan Gordon scored in the 72nd minute and the Galaxy beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Sunday to clinch a home game in the knockout round of the MLS Cup playoffs.
The Galaxy (12-6-15) are locked into the No. 3 seed in the Weste Conference a week ahead of the regular-season finale. Houston (7-14-12) remained in last place in the West.
In the buildup to Gordon’s goal, Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis made a diving save of Mike Magee’s shot attempt but failed to secure it. David Horst awkwardly attempted to poke the loose ball safely away but Gordon swooped in and blocked it back into the net.

PLAYA VISTA >> Seeing Chris Paul in ruing shoes and sweatpants before a Clippers practice certainly isn’t good news. And, seeing Paul, the Clippers’ star point guard, standing in ruing shows and sweats with hand wrapped, well that means the news is certainly worse.
Luckily for the Clippers, appearances can sometime be deceiving.
While Paul didn’t practice Sunday because of his hand injury, he’s not expected to miss any real time. Paul’s officially being called “day-to-day” with a sprained left thumb, an injury he likely would be able to play with if the Clippers were in the regular season.
“He’ll play in definitely one of the two (remaining preseason games), and that tells you it’s not that serious,” Doc Rivers said.
Paul suffered the injury Saturday, but he was still able to finish practice.
He broke a bone in his shooting hand, his right, last postseason, an injury that required surgery and cost him the remainder of his season.

PULLMAN, WASH. — When quarterback Mike Fafaul went 3 for 11 for 44 yards and two interceptions against Arizona State last, head coach Jim Mora said the quarterback struggled in part because he didn’t get enough help from his teammates and coaches. PULLMAN, WASH. >> Last year, Washington State knocked off UCLA in dramatic fashion in the Rose Bowl, scoring the game-wiing touchdown with three seconds left. Safety Adarius Pickett said he thought the Bruins “owed them one.”
When they had to a chance for revenge, the Bruins fell short. Playing without starting quarterback Josh Rosen (shoulder and hip), UCLA couldn’t keep pace with Washington State’s high-powered offense, falling 27-21 in front of a rain-soaked crowd of 29,301 at Martin Stadium. UCLA (3-4, 1-3 Pac-12) is off to its worst conference start in the five-year Jim Mora era.

LONG BEACH >> The St. Anthony High football team took care of business with a 43-6 nonleague victory over Bishop Montgomery at Clark Field on Friday.
“Our defense set the tone early as (Bishop Montgomery) only had two or maybe three first downs in the first half,” said Saints coach Mario Morales. “We are real big on the physical part of the game and I know our defense established that physicality early on and that was good for us.”
The Saints wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard on a 10-play, 58-yard drive on their first possession of the game, highlighted by a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Johy Buksa to tight end Kaman Selu.

DOWNEY >> Just about everything that could go wrong for Lynwood High’s football team did Friday night as the Knights had their homecoming celebration spoiled right from the opening kickoff in a 35-7 San Gabriel Valley League loss to Downey.
Lynwood (3-4, 0-2) committed 16 penalties, tued the ball over five times (two interceptions, one fumble, twice on downs) and was forced to punt on four occasions.
The Vikings (6-1, 2-0) took full advantage, begiing with the first play of the game, recovering a fumble after a Knights’ lateral attempt on the kickoff. Just three snaps and about 55 seconds later, Downey got on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run from Emari Demercado.
From there, Downy scored on a 70-yard screen pass from Trevor Hill to Christopher Atkins and a 24-yard strike from Hill to Tony Ramirez and coasted into halftime with a 22-0 advantage.

Rickard Rakell has ended his contract standoff with the Ducks, with the talented forward signing a six-year deal Friday that will pay him $22.8 million.
Rakell’s agent, Peter Wallen, confirmed the agreement to the Orange County Register. The new contract for the restricted free agent will carry a $3.8 million salary cap hit. Wallen said the contract does not contain a no-movement clause.
A corrective surgery Sept. 17 to remove scar tissue from his appendectomy in March kept Rakell from playing for Sweden in the World Cup of Hockey. His recovery also removed any added urgency to report to training camp Sept. 23.
It allowed the two sides to continue working on an extension while Rakell got well. Talks never ceased even when a gap persisted, but indications were emerging that both were building a bridge, presenting the possibility a deal could be reached sooner than later.

Eric Gomez laughed when recalling his first fight-night duties at Golden Boy Promotions.
“One of my jobs was unfolding the chairs,” he said. “Putting the chairs on the floor, putting the little stickers with the numbers on the chairs, picking up the managers, picking up the fighters from the airport, renting the van. I’d do the travel, I used to do the hotel reservations, I used to do the medical certifiers, I used to do the licensing.”
That was 2002, the year Golden Boy opened its doors. Fourteen years later, on Sept. 7, Gomez was promoted to president of the company owned by childhood friend and Hall of Fame fighter Oscar De La Hoya.
Gomez on Thursday spoke in prideful tones about his move up the ladder of one of boxing’s top promotional companies. He went from chair unfolder to matchmaker to senior vice president to el presidente.

The parity in the Pac-12 can be a curse for the conference as it tries to break into the College Football Playoff, but the wild weekends on the West Coast continue to fuel the UCLA football team’s hopes for a chance at the conference championship.
The Bruins (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) say they are down but not out of the Pac-12 race, entering Saturday’s game at Washington State at 7:30 p.m. The unpredictability in the Pac-12 South gives them hope, but they can’t afford many more missteps.
The Bruins could easily leave Pullman, Wash., at 1-3 in Pac-12 play for the first time under head coach Jim Mora. Their starting quarterback’s health is still a question. They haven’t had a ruing threat in nearly a month. They’re facing a surging team that just knocked off Stanford, something UCLA hasn’t done in almost a decade.

The Suburban League held its second cross country meet of the season at Cerritos Regional Park where Cerritos took the top two spots in the boys race. However, La Mirada won the meet with five of the top eight finishers and all but clinched a share of the league title.
Bill Chuang was first for the Dons with a time of 16:39 and Brandon Vo was the top finisher for the Matadores at 16:49. Cerritos freshman Cole Sawires Yager finished second.
In the girls race, Norwalk took the meet and the top two spots with juniors Misty Diaz and Ruby Galindo. Diaz finished at 18:55.

Los Alamitos vs. Edison at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 7:30 p.m.: The Griffins (4-2, 1-0) are ranked No. 7 in CIF Southe Section Division 3 after impressive performances against upper-division opponents such as Long Beach Poly and La Habra. The Chargers (5-1, 1-0), No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 3, also has a high-powered offense and its only loss is to top-ranked Mater Dei.

LOS ANGELES >> USC ruing back Justin Davis, who has a high ankle sprain, will not play on Saturday at Arizona, Trojans head coach Clay Helton aounced.
Davis was not at practice this week.
“He’s still being very tender on the ankle,” Helton said.
Through six games, the 6-foot-1 senior leads the Trojans in rushing with 476 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He had 341 yards in the past three games, including consecutive 100-yard rushing efforts against Utah and Arizona State.
Davis injured his right ankle in the second half of USC’s 21-17 win over Colorado last Saturday. He left the locker room afterward on crutches. A walking boot was placed on his right foot.
“It’s a next-man-up mentality,” Helton said.
In place of Davis, sophomore Ronald Jones is expected to start.
One season after he set a school single-season freshman rushing record, Jones has not been as productive.
He has 208 rushing yards and one touchdown on 46 carries.

The Wilson High girls golf team clinched its eighth consecutive Moore League team title by beating Long Beach Poly 221-247 on Tuesday at Recreation Park Golf Course. Wilson (17-4, 8-0) was once again led by senior Ali Morallos, who made one birdie and finished at 1-over-par 39. Riley Henry added a round of 43 for the Bruins that included four pars, and Maya Olson was the low finisher for Poly with 45.
“We continue to be blessed with a group of dedicated players that are always putting in extra work to make sure they are prepared for competition,” Wilson coach Jeff Evans said.
Monday is the first day of the Moore League Individual Touament, where Morallos will try to win her third consecutive league title. Last year, she shot 11-under (135) to post the lowest total score in league girls’ golf history.

Last week’s inaugural Aquatic Capital of America Hall of Fame ceremony showcased the city’s unique water sports history.
“This is a tribute to all of you, thank you for coming to celebrate our history,” said ACOA president Rich Foster, who helped brainchild the star-studded event at the Pete Archer Rowing Center in Marine Stadium.
The ceremony took place on the rowing center’s patio, with 300 audience members enjoying a perfect, windless, warm evening. Politicians like congressman Alan Lowenthal and assemblyman Patrick O’Doell were on hand, as was U.S. swimming legend John Naber, who served as emcee.
Naber reminisced about wiing an NCAA title at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, as well as setting world records at the pool the following year at the Olympic trials. He also asked all the Olympians in the crowd to stand. There were more than three dozen, including more than two dozen who were there only as spectators.

MINNEAPOLIS >> Maya Moore had 21 points and 12 rebounds to help the Miesota Lynx even the WNBA Finals at one game apiece with a 79-60 victory over the Sparks in Game 2 on Tuesday night.
Sylvia Fowles had 13 points and 15 boards and Miesota held Los Angeles to 32.9 percent shooting to bounce back from a last-second loss in Game 1. Seimone Augustus scored 14 points and Miesota dominated on the glass, 46-32, to pull away.
Nneka Ogwumike had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Sparks, who head back home for the next two games in the best-of-five series. Candace Parker was quiet with six points on 3-for-12 shooting.
The Lynx are trying to become the first back-to-back champions in the league since the Sparks repeated in 2002. A win in this series would also give Miesota its fourth championship, which would tie the Lynx with the Houston Comets for most in league history.

LOS ANGELES — Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will start a do-or-die Game 4 of the National League Division Series today against the Washington Nationals. Right-hander Joe Ross starts for Washington. The game begins at 2 p.m. at Dodger Stadium by virtue of the Chicago Cubs’ loss to the San Francisco Giants last night.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Nationals manager Dusty Baker did not reveal their starting pitchers until the moing of the game.
Roberts said the decision to start Kershaw hinged on the availability of his relief pitchers — “with how they’ve been used the last couple days, and looking at potential for Julio (Urias), and obviously there’s some pitch-count mindfulness with Julio. With Clayton, we had complete certainty from the training staff, the doctors, that health wasn’t a factor.”
Urias, the 20-year-old left-hander who made his major league debut in May, was the other candidate to start the game. He has yet to appear in a game this series.

EL SEGUNDO >> Left wing Devin Setoguchi skated with center Anze Kopitar and right wing Dustin Brown on Monday, which indicated he made the Kings’ opening-night roster as the longest of long shots after arriving at their training camp last month on a pro tryout basis.
Opening-night rosters must be set by 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The joyful man sat by his locker as he scrolled through his phone and bantered with a reporter.
That pregame routine stopped abruptly. Lakers coach Luke Walton indicated he would like to speak with Nick Young privately.
Walton hardly berated Young, though. With Walton plaing to start Young in place of an injured Luol Deng, the Lakers’ coach simply challenged Young to take advantage of that opportunity by playing defense.
Nearly two hours later, the Lakers secured a 124-115 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario as Young provided 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting with four rebounds and two steals. The play impressed Walton so much that he described Young’s defense as “spectacular.”
“Obviously he’s going to make shots here or there,” Walton said. “But defensively, he’s fighting over screens, making one-on-one [stops] and getting in and mixing it up.”

LOS ANGELES >> The Dodgers have been pushed to the brink of elimination in the first round of the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
The Nationals scored four times in the third iing Monday afteoon then tued it over to their bullpen which preserved an 8-3 victory in Game 2 of the National League Division Series.
The win puts the Nationals up two games to one in the best-of-five series with Game 4 scheduled for Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.
The series has been an example of 21st century baseball with starting pitchers pushed to the side early and a relay team of relievers used to pursue favorable matchups. The Nationals’ Game 1 starter, Max Scherzer, completed six iings – a herculean workload in this series. No other starter has even thrown a pitch in a sixth iing. Clayton Kershaw completed five in Game 1. Every other starter has been gone by the end of the fifth.

SALINAS >> Six tus from the end of the Pirelli World Challenge Championships Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday, Patrick Long of Manhattan Beach went off the pavement in a battle with Johy O’Coell for the checkered flag.
Soon after the finish, PWC officials deemed O’Coell for an on-track infraction and moved him from first to fifth. As a result, Alvaro Parente of Porto,Portugal was moved into first and secured the driver’s championship in a battle with Long.
O’Coell, a four-time GT champion from Flowery Branch, Georgia, was pushing his Cadillac to his fourth win of the season. Long was second before going off the pavement in Tu 5 but dropped back to fifth.
During the 27th and final lap, on a green-and-white flag, O’Coell slid wide in Tu 4 on the 2.238-mile, 11-tu road course. Long, ruing second at the time, made an outside pass attempt on O’Coell in Tu 5 but the two racers made contact and Long’s Porsche went wide into the out

The opportunity was there.
USC quarterback Sam Daold spotted an opening.
After marching the Trojans into the red zone on the first series Saturday against Colorado, Daold dropped to pass. Receivers were draped when the play began. He saw a gap open in front of him.
So the redshirt freshman quarterback scrambled downfield. He inched toward the goal line and dove across into the end zone.
But the helmet of Colorado linebacker Keeth Olugbode knocked the ball out of Daold’s grasp. Ahkello Witherspoon, a coerback, scooped it up.
For USC, its first chance for points vanished.
In a 21-17 victory, the Trojans put up one of their best offensive displays, tallying a season-high 539 total yards against Colorado, which had ranked 13th in total defense through the first five weeks. But the effort was hamstrung by four tuovers. A game in which they seemed poised to win by double digits was tightened.
